Need help with Google Workspace?

Tell us what is broken. We reply the same working day.

One morning staff cannot sign in. The Admin console says suspended. Mail stops, Drive files are unreachable, and Google’s reply is a template. This is one of the most asked questions in the Workspace community, and one of the least usefully answered.

First: what exactly is suspended?

The word covers three completely different situations, and the fix differs for each:

  • A single user account. Suspended by your own admin or an automated policy. Solvable in minutes in the Admin console: Directory, Users, select the account, Reactivate.
  • The whole organisation, billed by Google. Google suspended the subscription. The most common cause by far is a missed payment: an expired card, a declined charge, an unpaid invoice. Once the outstanding balance is settled with the payment method your billing account actually uses, service normally returns within hours, occasionally the next business day.
  • An account managed by a reseller. Billing sits with a third party, so the suspension was set by the reseller or by Google through the reseller. It may mean the reseller has not paid Google, or that the reseller has not been paid by you, or simply that nobody is answering. You cannot fix it from your console, because it is not your billing.

Mixing these up is why people write to the wrong support channel for weeks. So before anything else, save the exact suspension message and any email Google or your reseller sent, note who your billing provider is (Admin console, Billing, Subscriptions shows whether the subscription is managed by Google or by a named reseller), and find a super admin who can act.

If it is a payment problem

  1. Admin console, Billing: check the suspension reason, the payment method and the outstanding balance.
  2. Check the suspension reason and billing provider before making a payment. Then follow the payment instructions for your account type. Monthly card or bank accounts: update the payment method and settle the balance. Invoiced billing accounts: pay the open invoice by the method shown on it; you cannot simply swap in a company card. Reseller customers: pay the reseller according to your contract, not Google.
  3. Data is kept while a subscription is suspended, but suspension is not permanent storage. A subscription that stays unpaid is eventually cancelled, and cancellation is what starts the path to deletion. Treat the suspended state as a countdown, not a parking spot.

If it is a policy or abuse suspension

Spam sent from a compromised mailbox is the classic trigger. You appeal from the Admin console, and the appeal that stands a chance is specific: what happened, what you fixed, which passwords were reset, which filters or forwards were removed. Vague appeals get template rejections. A good appeal does not guarantee a reversal, but a vague one guarantees delay.

If you are stuck at a reseller

A subscription can be transferred away from an unresponsive reseller, either to direct billing with Google or to another partner. The current process runs through the Admin console: under Reseller management a super admin enters the new reseller’s Public Identifier, and the new reseller then completes the transfer on their side. Two things the transfer does not do: it does not cancel what you may still owe the old reseller under your contract, and it does not by itself lift a suspension. The subscription usually has to be active, or be reactivated, before the new billing owner can take it over.

Untangling that order of operations is exactly the kind of thing we do for companies as a Google Cloud Partner: we establish who owns the billing, take over the conversation with Google and get service back without experiments in production.

Related: if the person who had admin rights is gone, read how to reach real support first, and lock down a second super admin once you are back in.
